Avalanche Rally Stuns Sabres in Thrilling 6-5 OT Clash

The Buffalo Sabres fell victim to a furious Colorado Avalanche rally, dropping a heartbreaker 6-5 in overtime Thursday night at Ball Arena. A high-energy game saw the Avalanche erase a two-goal deficit late in the third period before Devon Toews sealed the win on a breakaway in the extra frame.

Sabres’ Stars Shine, but Avalanche Overwhelm Late

Jason Zucker showcased his knack for big moments, recording a hat trick and a four-point night that included his 400th career point. The veteran winger’s standout performance was complemented by Tage Thompson, who notched three assists, and young defenseman Bowen Byram, who contributed a slick 2-on-1 finish. Rookie forward Zach Benson also found the back of the net in a critical moment.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen faced heavy fire in the Sabres’ net, stopping 23 of 29 shots. His Avalanche counterpart Scott Wedgewood exited with an injury in the third period, forcing Mackenzie Blackwood into action, where he allowed a single goal on limited chances.

The Avalanche leaned on their star-studded lineup, with Cale Makar and Toews dominating the blueline. Makar’s two goals, including a clutch late tally, and Toews’ three-point effort were pivotal. Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen added multi-point contributions, driving Colorado’s relentless offense.

Game Recap: A Rollercoaster Battle

Buffalo controlled much of the opening period, building a 2-0 lead. Zucker’s quick stick on the power play and Byram’s skillful backhander gave the Sabres early momentum. The Avalanche pressed late, hitting posts but failing to break through before intermission.

The second period featured controversy as Buffalo successfully challenged a Colorado goal for offsides, preserving their lead. Zucker’s redirection on another power play extended the advantage, but Makar’s brilliant solo effort kept the Avalanche within striking distance. Colorado’s late push in the frame hinted at their comeback potential.

The final period was a whirlwind. Colorado struck early through Ross Colton, but Benson’s opportunistic goal restored the Sabres’ cushion. A goalie injury, a heated scrum, and a successful Buffalo challenge for goaltender interference highlighted the intensity.

Colorado’s persistence paid off as Rantanen’s power-play goal and a pair of 6-on-5 strikes from Makar and Jonathan Drouin forced overtime. The Avalanche capitalized quickly in the extra session, with Toews breaking free for the decisive tally.

Looking Ahead

Buffalo’s loss highlights their offensive firepower but also their struggles to maintain leads under pressure. The Sabres, now looking to regroup, will conclude their four-game road trip Saturday night against the Vegas Golden Knights. With lessons from this high-scoring affair fresh in their minds, they aim to tighten up defensively while continuing their offensive surge.

Coverage begins on MSG at 9:30 p.m. with puck drop at 10.
