The Buffalo Sabres have re-evaluated their goaltending approach following recent challenges, including Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s injury and limited opportunities for 22-year-old Devon Levi. The team’s general manager, Kevyn Adams, made the call to reclaim veteran goaltender James Reimer off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks, adding the 36-year-old back into the roster to support the Sabres’ goalie rotation.
Luukkonen sustained an undisclosed injury during Sunday’s practice and was pulled after the second period in Monday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. Head coach Lindy Ruff cited concerns that Luukkonen’s condition could deteriorate further without ample rest. Luukkonen’s status remains day-to-day as the Sabres assess his recovery. In the interim, Devon Levi, who has started only four games since the season began, is expected to guard the net against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday if Luukkonen is unavailable.
While Levi’s NHL appearances have been sparse, Adams has kept him on the roster to provide backup experience. However, Levi’s development could benefit from more frequent ice time with the AHL’s Rochester Americans, where he could gain the game-time consistency crucial for reaching his potential.
“His work ethic is incredible, and he’s staying sharp in practice, even without consistent play,” said Ruff. Levi has registered a 4.10 goals-against average and .866 save percentage in his limited outings, a sign that more regular play could enhance his skill development.
Luukkonen has shouldered the majority of Buffalo’s goaltending duties since early 2024, starting 47 of the last 57 games. His strong performances, including recognition as the NHL’s third star of the week, have cemented his role as the Sabres’ top goalie. Ruff’s decision to cease the rotation between Levi and Luukkonen reflects his confidence in Luukkonen’s game-readiness and impact on the team’s success.
Reimer, who previously joined the Sabres during training camp and signed a one-year contract in July, adds veteran depth to Buffalo’s lineup. While he didn’t see preseason action with the Sabres, his experience across teams like Toronto, Florida, and Carolina over 503 NHL games makes him a steady option during this transitional period.
As the Sabres continue their season, this revamped goaltending plan will be vital in adapting to challenges and maximizing the roster’s potential. Fans will closely watch how Luukkonen recovers, how Levi’s career develops, and how Reimer’s return influences the team’s performance in the coming weeks.
